Hannut, one of Europe's cross-Only local star, Veerle Dejaeghere could defend Belgium's honour at the famous Lotto Crosscup of Hannut in Belgium at the weekend where five of the six podium places went to Kenyans.

Hannut, one of Europe's cross-country classics has had many big name winners through the years with stars such as Gaston Reiff, Gaston Roelants, Gordon Pirie, Miel Puttemans, Nat Muir, Fernando Mamede, Vincent Rousseau, all having tasted success at the venue but it was Kenyans Linet Masai and Leonard Komon who took the honours in 2008.

In the women's race, Masai pulled away after only 500 meters along with her countrywoman Viola Kibiwott and it was left to Belgium's Veerle Dejaeghere, the winner of the Iris Lotto Crosscup of Brussels, to lead the chase, along with Nathalie De Vos and Mimi Belete.

In the end, there was no denying Masai's class as she eased up to a facile victory.
